As autumn arrives, it ushers in a season of vibrant musical festivals. Since last year, the same talented team behind the Levitate Music Festival has graced us with “Flannel Jam,” a celebration crafted specifically to embrace the spirit of autumn. This delightful festival hosts two mesmerizing shows—one in Marshfield and the other on Nantucket.
As the name implies, all guests are enthusiastically encouraged to don their flannels at the festival, a quintessential fall fashion choice. This, coupled with beloved autumn essentials such as hot cider, delectable donuts, fine whiskey, all things pumpkin-spiced, and an exceptional, meticulously curated lineup featuring New England’s cherished musicians, breathes vibrant life into this event.
This year, the festival eagerly hosts a diverse lineup of eight exceptional acts set to grace the stage in Marshfield. Among these musical talents are the likes of Brich Swart & Seselia, Ali McGuirk, The Heavy Heavy, Melt, Jackson & Mihali, Chadwick Stokes and The Pintos, Futurebirds, and Old Crow Medicine Show.
Hailing originally from Massachusetts, Birch Swart graces the stage with his indie, blues, and country-infused melodies, adding a touch of homegrown magic to the festival. This time, he’s joined by the local ensemble Seselia, whose captivating harmonies and instrumental prowess create an enchanting synergy, leaving New England fans spellbound by their “string magic.”

Also a local, Ali McGuirk has enjoyed significant success, beginning with her acclaimed album “Slow Burn” released in 2017. Her journey has continued with the release of several captivating singles and her latest album, “Til It’s Gone.” As the Sunday spotlight shines on her, anticipation runs high in the crowd, eagerly awaiting the soulful rendition of her hit single “Milk,” a song that resonates deeply with her enthusiastic audience.

The Heavy Heavy electrified the stage with their dynamic rock sound, elevating the festival’s energy to exhilarating heights. The audience reveled in the pulsating performance delivered by this quintet. Drawing inspiration from iconic musical legends such as Fleetwood Mac, The Rolling Stones, and the British Invasion pop acts, they infuse a contemporary spirit into the timeless genre of rock, captivating a new generation of music enthusiasts.

As Melt takes the stage, a palpable wave of excitement courses through the crowd. Eagerly gearing up for the release of their debut album, they treat their fans to a medley of their acclaimed singles, igniting an air of anticipation. To the delight of their audience, they unveil three brand-new tracks, enlisting their fans to partake in the thrilling quest to discover a favorite among them. Originating from the heart of New York City, the band unfurled their signature soul-pop sound, with a standout moment being their electrifying rendition of the hit single “Sour Candy.”

Next up, a beloved duo within the Levitate family takes the stage, with Mihali and Jackson Wetherbee gracing the spotlight. Their reggae-infused performance brings forth soothing vibes and brilliant lyrics, captivating the audience. Familiar faces in the crowd shower them with cheers as they deliver an exceptional and unforgettable set.

Stepping into the limelight next is Chadwick Stokes and The Pintos, known for their fusion of funk, reggae, and rock. As a cherished fan favorite, they skillfully weave important political and social themes into their music, using their platform as a powerful catalyst for change.

Hailing from the roots of Georgia, Futurebirds infused the festival with an invigorating blend of indie and country rock vibes. Their performance was a spirited showcase of high energy and sheer fun, delivering a forty-minute set that brilliantly encapsulated the classic tunes that have defined their illustrious career.
Bringing the night to a magnificent close is the much-anticipated Old Crow Medicine Show, the Americana string band hailing from Nashville, Tennessee. Their performance is nothing short of a mesmerizing spectacle, leaving the audience in a continuous uproar of cheers since the moment they graced the stage. With origins dating back to 1998, this band’s enduring legacy continues to shine through their timeless music, exemplified by their latest masterpiece, “Jubilee.”

The Flannel Jam festival marks a wonderful beginning to the fall season, making for an excellent way to spend a Sunday during a long weekend.
