Boygenius made their triumphant return to Boston, gracing the MGM Music Hall with two unforgettable, sold-out nights. This marked the trio’s second visit to the city in the same year, having previously headlined the RE:Set festival back in June.
Launching the tour in grand fashion is none other than “Palehound,” an indie rock ensemble with roots firmly planted in Boston since their inception in 2013, fronted by the charismatic singer-songwriter Ellen Kempner. Known for their emotionally charged lyrics and a unique fusion of indie rock, folk, and grunge influences, Palehound has left an indelible mark on the music landscape. As the opening act, Palehound sets the stage for the awe-inspiring spectacle that is sure to unfold.
“The Boys,” a playful nickname coined by the members of Boygenius for themselves, are spotted on one side of the stage as they groove along to Palehound’s performance.
“The Boys Are Back In Town” by Thin Lizzy fills the venue, signaling the imminent arrival of Boygenius onto the stage. To build anticipation, the trio treats the audience to an acapella snippet of “Without You Without Them” behind the stage, displayed magnificently on the big screen. Moments later, the crowd’s excitement reaches a peak as Phoebe Bridgers dashes from one side of the stage to the other, confidently taking her place on the left, with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus in following her, igniting cheers from the crowd as they launch into “$20.”
The night’s lineup featured some unforgettable tunes, including the likes of “True Blue,” “Stay Down,” and “Letter to An Old Poet.” Adding a personal touch, each member took a solo turn, with Lucy Dacus delivering the heartfelt “Please Stay,” Julien Baker showcasing “Favor,” and Phoebe Bridgers serenading the crowd with “Graceland Too.” But the real crowd-pleasers were the surprises: Boygenius treated their fans to a brand-new, unreleased track titled “Black Hole” and made jaws drop with the announcement of their upcoming EP, “the rest,” set to drop on the highly anticipated date of Friday, October 13th.
The trio’s performance of “Not Strong Enough” sets the stage for a thrilling encore, and amid a sea of fan cheers, they return to deliver a heartwarming rendition of “Ketchum, ID” before concluding the show with the powerful “Salt in the Wound.” In an astonishing twist that continues the night’s string of surprises, Hozier, who had recently sold out two shows at Leader Bank Pavilion over the weekend, graces the stage to join them in a memorable performance of this final song.
Boygenius’s deep connection with the audience is tangible throughout their performance, a testament to their genuine passion for their music and the profound impact their lyrics have had on their devoted fans. The atmosphere is electric, brimming with an infectious blend of camaraderie, excitement, and pure enjoyment. This is a show that simply cannot be missed, an unforgettable experience of music, connection, and pure fun.
