One of the most enthralling things about live music is getting to watch one person take control of a
room full of thousands and have them hang on his every movement. That was what the experience was
like on Friday night at House of Blues when Jamaican-American multi-instrumentalist Masego took to
the stage. The performer originally burst onto the scene in 2017 on a collaboration with the esteemed
FKJ’s platinum-selling single “Tadow”.
In the years since Masego has stepped out on his own, he inked a record deal with Capitol
Records. His self-titled major label debut LP came out in early March of this year. He’s currently on a
headline tour in support of the record, it’s a 28 date run that kicked off in Santa Ana, CA, on March 28.
On Friday night, it stopped in Boston for a sold-out show at the House of Blues.
Kicking the night off was Nigerian-American vocalist Ogi, an R&B artist with powerhouse vocals and a
background in performing dating back to high school. To date, she has only one EP in her catalog, but she
got her start by posting covers on Instagram. It was a cover of PJ Morton’s “Alright” that initially got her
put her on the map. On Friday, she performed a brief seven-song set that consisted of the six songs on
her EP Monologues, in addition to a cover of the Norah Jones tune “Don’t Know Why” that she put her
own spin on.
Though scheduled to take the stage at 9, Masego waited until 9:15 to come out with a move that only
allowed the hype in the room to build more. With the crowd in a frenzy, he came out, saxophone in hand
while performing “Navajo.” Nearly every person in the front row had their phone fixed on Masego while
They sang back every lyric. On top of the performance, he also built into his performance audience
interaction such as tossing roses or fake cash at fans from the stage.
Some particular highlights from his set included “Mystery Lady,” “Old Age,” and “King’s Rant.” The
Friday night, party-like atmosphere was the perfect setting for the genre and the stage show that
Masego had prepared for Boston. He would go on to wrap up the set with the song that put him on the
map, “Tadow.”
