For the first time, Morat brings their live show to the city of Boston. The band, known for their rock/pop sound, visited thirteen cities around the United States to present their “Si Ayer Fuera Hoy” tour to the fans.
The group Morat is composed by Juan Pablo Isaza, Martin Vargas, Simon Vargas and Juan Pablo Villamil. The band members met back in Colombia at the early age of five years old, when they attended the same school. The band was formed in the year 2011 and gained worldwide recognition when they released the song “Mi Nuevo Vicio” along with Paulina Rubio. Since then, Morat has released four studio albums and many singles with big voices in the Latin music scene, like Juanes and Reik, and has been nominated for two Latin Grammys.
The day of the show, thousands of fans lined up outside Big Night Live to see the band perform. Not a single space in the venue was left unoccupied, Morat was about to play a sold-out show. Around eight-fifteen, the room went dark. The fans cheered as Martin, the drummer of the group, started playing the drums, giving his back to the crowd. The rest of the band joins the stage and open the show singing “Besos in Guerra”.
All the band members are sporting black outfits, each one portraying their own fashion style. Right in the middle of the stage, Juan Pablo Isaza plays the guitar and sings lead vocals. During the song “Punto y Aparte”, the lead singer leaves the guitar aside and shares his piano skills with everyone in the room. At the right side of the stage is Juan Pablo Villamil, he presents himself as a triple threat as he plays guitar, ukulele, and banjo. On the left side of the stage, Simon Vargas plays the base. The base player is by far the most dynamic member of the band, his dance moves could headline a show of their own. At the back of the stage, Martin Vargas rocks the drums and percussion.
In between songs, the band members talk to the audience. They share the experiences that inspired their songs, as if they were telling a bedtime story to the crowd. The way they speak to the audience sounds almost poetic. I found it easy to relate to the love tales behind the songs. In these moments, the band feels as approachable as ever.
Morat sing songs from all of their albums, giving primary focus to their latest release “Si ayer fuera Hoy”. From the very beginning of the show, the energy is exuberant. As seen with other popular boy bands around the world, the enthusiasm coming from the fans surpasses the level you experience in most concerts. During the whole night, you could feel the floor of the venue moving as the fans jumped. The voices of the fans accompanied every song almost as if they were hired by the band itself to sing some backup vocals.
Morat sings their song “Cómo te Atreves” and say their goodbyes as they close a great night of music. These shows are a great gift to the Latin community in America. The artists bring the nostalgic feeling of being at home through their music. I was happy to see Morat receive so much love in Boston and we are all hoping to have them back in the future.
