CONCERT REVIEW: NOTHING MORE AT THE PALLADIUM

BY María José Torre

Two thousand people gathered at The Palladium in Worcester to experience Nothing More’s Spirits tour. All the way from San Antonio, Texas, the band brings us all their greatest hits.

The post- hardcore band A thousand below opens the night with their song “Hells Find you Everywhere”.  A thousand below bring us a set of seven songs. Through their set, the audience enjoys the classic elements of hardcore music as well as the dynamic harmonies and melodies that characterize the Post-Hardcore sound. During the song “Venenosa”, lead singer James Deberg instructs the crowd to mosh during their song. The energy is high as they close their set with their song “Sinking Me”.

Up next is the band Crown the Empire. The group, originally from Dallas, Texas, are touring with Nothing More, presenting songs from their latest single “Black Sheep” and latest album “Sudden Sky”.  Crown the Empire first gained nationwide recognition with their album “Fall Out”, and has continued to deliver great hardcore records. During the song “Machines”, the guitar player approaches the crowd and asks a fan to play the last cord of the song, the crowd goes wild. Through their set, the fans show their excitement by crowd surfing and creating mosh pits. Crown the Empire closes their set with their song “Dancing with the Dead”.

Mr. Sadman by The Charlottes starts playing on the speakers of the venue. The fans cheer, this song hints to the audience that the show is about to start. Nothing More opens the show with their song “Spirits”. Lead singer Johny Hawkins, walks around the stage close to the crowd wearing only jeans, he is sporting a Steven Tyler hairdo and has paint all over his chest and is wearing no shoes. He takes everything in as he starts singing. He stands among the speakers to be closest to the audience and the fans welcome him waving their arms back and ford to the rhythm of the music.

The band has their beginnings in music opening shows for other major hardcore groups. When Johny Hawkins became lead singer of the band, he brought a unique voice and presence to the ensemble, strongly collaborating with their nationwide success. Nothing More’s fans have evolved with the artists. Fans in their thirties that have been listening to the band since their teenage years are present at the venue.  Younger fans are there too, just discovering the world of hardcore and rock, they are the ones participating in the mosh pits and bringing the energy within the venue to a whole other level.

Nothing More closes the show with their song “Drum Solo”. The band leaves everything on the stage. Through the years, Nothing More has been a vessel for self-expression for their fans. To this day, they continue to deliver songs that inspire freedom and unity among their listeners. The band ends their American tour at the end of May and then continue to perform in Europe until the end of June.
