CONCERT REVIEW: THE WARNING AT BRIGHTON MUSIC HALL

Mexican hard rock band The Warning took over Brighton Music Hall for a very sold out show on Friday night, as part of their Error World Tour. Joining them for the evening were local rockers The Devil’s Twins. Eager fans showed up early on, packing the Allston venue right after the doors opened.

The room was packed by the time The Devil’s Twins hit the stage; the punk duo kicked off the night with loads of raw energy. Singer Nicole Coogan shared their excitement as they got a last minute call the night before to open the show, as they blasted through a short but intense set. Kicking off with a sultry cover of Elvis Presley’s “Trouble”, the band featured many tracks off their latest album, Horns, released this summer. From the rowdy “Bad Karma” to the hypnotic “If I Was A Ghost”, and the set’s closer “New Orleans”, the band’s energy and swagger captured the audience with their unique storytelling and sound.

After The Devil’s Twins’ exciting set, it was now time for The Warning to take over. The intimate venue was packed, with fans from wall to wall; the crowd spanned generations, with families bringing their small children to see the show. The audience erupted in screams as the Villarreal sisters stepped onto the stage, kicking off the set with “DISCIPLE” and “Z”. Guitarist Dany Villarreal shared how excited the band was over the sold-out show, as they repeatedly showed their gratitude to the fans.

The Warning is a dynamo on stage, with explosive energy and infinite amounts of rock & roll attitude; from drummer Paulina Villarreal’s charismatic performance, to bassist Alejandra Villarreal’s cool signature moves, the sisters strike gold with their powerful stage presence and highly skilled musicianship. They featured many tracks off their most recent album, Error, from the anthemic “CHOKE” to “KOOL AID KIDS”. The songs come to life when performed live, with a much heavier, gritty sound. Fans were also excited to hear some older tracks, like the intense “Dull Knives (Cut Better)” and “Queen of the Murder Scene”. The crowd showed their admiration in many forms, singing along, fists in the air, and even chanting as if it were a fútbol match, with a vast majority sporting the band’s merch they had just purchased; the fans were just as passionate as the band in their displays of support.

As we reached the last section of the show, the band’s gritty rendition of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” was one of the many highlights of the night, closing the set with two songs in Spanish: “MARTIRIO” and fan favorite “Narcisista”. The language crossover did not stop English-speaking fans from chanting along. As they left the stage, the crowd clamored for one more song, and the band returned for a powerful performance of “EVOLVE”, wrapping up an unforgettable evening. The Warning has shown time and time again that rock and roll is alive and well, in the hands of a younger generation of female rockers ready to take over the world.
