German metalcore party animals Electric Callboy closed their 2024 North American tour with a bang in front of a packed room at MGM Music Hall on Sunday night, joined on tour by Bury Tomorrow and If Not For Me. The colorful crowd flocked towards the Lansdowne venue ready for a wild celebration, with looks going from the conventional all-black ensemble, to rainbow jumpsuits and neon attire.
If Not For Me set the start of the evening with a short but intense set, getting the crowd ready for Bury Tomorrow to ramp up the heat even more. Hailing from the UK, the metalcore outfit brought forward their explosive energy and defiant attitude, prompting crowd surfers to immediately start pouring in. The balance between the contrasting vocals and the corrosive sound makes for a potent, high octane live performance that demands both attention and participation. They’d also take the time to address the audience and candidly tap into the subjects of inclusivity and taking a stand against discrimination, highlighting the unique camaraderie amongst metal fans. The explosive set would wrap up on a high with “Choke” and “DEATH (Even Colder),” leaving the crowd gasping for air.
A short break allowed for the setup to change, as blue and pink lights would sporadically bathe the ever growing crowd. Fans were excited to see Electric Callboy on a much larger setting, having just played at the more intimate Big Night Live last fall. The party atmosphere was palpable, as colors flooded the room— even a set of light up shoes could be seen up in the air peeking through behind the barricade. The band kicked off with a literal blast, as thick confetti erupted to the beat of “Tekkno Train.” With its signature cheeky humor, Electric Callboy’s unhinged energy was contagious and had the entire room dancing and crowdsurfing, of course.
One of the highlights of the set would come early on, with a cover of Escada’s dance hit “Everytime We Touch”— the contrast between techno and metalcore was so unique, yet intoxicating. The energy in the room was that of a wild celebration, where you could let loose and express yourself in any way: some dancing on their own, some with their partners, others holding onto their friends and jumping, creating a party for everyone.
The band sprinkled in pop culture nods sporadicaly, some more blatant than others. From the brief cover of Darude’s “Sandstorm,” to a full blown performance of Frozen’s “Let It Go,” fun was always the constant. In another one of the many highlights, the entire crowd came together for a cover of Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way,” which would catch you off guard if you didn’t know that plenty of metalheads are also into some good old bubblegum pop.
As the set was reaching its peak, fans were treated to a guest appearance by Conquer Divide’s Kia Taylor, invited to perform their duet track, “Fuckboi”. A quick stage exit would bring the crew back for their extended encore, including “Pump It” and “Mindreader”. The band was joined on stage by everyone else on the tour, as they closed their US trek with the energetic “We Got The Moves.” Without a doubt, Electric Callboy made sure to close out their short American run with a bang, bringing together the most unlikely genres in the best way possible: completely out of control.
