The Lilypad at Cambridge welcomed Canadian band Meltt for a night of psychedelic melodies and heavy riffs.
The night of music kicked off with Maeko, a familiar face in Boston’s local scene. You might’ve caught him not too long ago warming up the stage for The Q Tip Bandits. This time, he’s back to create the perfect atmosphere for Meltt at the Lily Pad. Maeko’s music has a way of infusing everyday experiences with an effortless, introspective vibe, turning his inside world into something relatable and enhancing experiences that, at first sight, can seem ordinary. His latest album, “Cool,” features hits like “Click Flash Polaroid” and “Augmented,” which, during the night, were crowd favorites.
Meltt takes the stage, instantly capturing the Lily Pad’s attention and igniting curiosity about their set for the night. The ethereal, psychedelic tones of “Into the Blue” permeate the venue, reminiscent of the distinct styles of past alternative rock icons. It’s apparent that Meltt doesn’t merely play in the alternative rock realm—they are also genuine fans of the genre. Their music pays homage to the lineage of influential bands, showcasing both a deep reverence and a personal connection to the genre’s rich history.
The band’s musical journey began back in Vancouver during their seventh-grade years, initially playing covers in a band. The pivotal shift in their musical trajectory occurred during college when they began showcasing their original compositions at house parties and university events. Over time, their fanbase expanded significantly, culminating in a devoted following. This year, their fan support has enabled them to embark on the highly anticipated USA/Canadian tour, dubbed the Eternals Ember Tour, as a gesture of gratitude to their dedicated fans.
As the evening progresses, the crowd sways along to the melodies, showing particular enthusiasm for hits like “Love Again” and “Within You, Within Me.” When the encore approaches, following the soulful rendition of “Fool of You,” the band playfully remarks about their customary stage exit. However, owing to the intimate layout of the Lilypad lacking a backstage area, they seamlessly continue their set, concluding the night with the resonant tunes of “On Your Own” and “Deeper Water.”
Meltt has meticulously crafted a musical journey that aligns with the essence of their band name—immersing listeners into a sonic landscape where one can melt away into the music, offering a transient escape from reality. Their thematic essence mirrors a fusion of personal narratives interwoven with astute observations and contemplations about the broader world. The intimate ambiance they cultivated within the venue elevates their show into a great evening, ideal for effortless enjoyment and profound immersion.
