Julia Jacklin returns to Boston to present us with her new album, Pre-Pleasure. The venue opens its doors at 7 pm, welcoming the long line of fans that have been waiting on Brighton Road eager to experience the show. Opener act Mimi Gilbert, American singer/songwriter, opens up the show with her guitar tunes and astonishing lyrics. The artist sets the venue for a great night of music.
Julia Jacklin, originally from Sydney, Australia, started her music career in the year 2014 in a band called “Phantastic Ferniture”. In the year 2016, she released her debut album “Don’t Let The Kids Win”, winning the public’s attention and love with songs like “Pool Party” and “Coming of Age”. In her new album, Julia brings us the indie pop sound she is well known for, as she explores themes like love, intimacy, and building a relationship with oneself.
The singer takes the stage wearing a black dress covered in red flowers, and high black boots. She welcomes the crowd with her song “Don’t Let the Kids Win”. Jacklin plays through the setlist, holding on to her faithful guitar. When she performs the song “Ignore Tenderness”, she leaves her guitar aside and interacts solely with the audience as she shares the message of the song. “Ignore Tenderness” presents the connection between pleasure and sexuality as a double entendre. On one side, there is the body’s natural way of desiring closeness and vulnerability. On the other hand, the idea that through intimacy you are giving a part of yourself away. Therefore, when searching for pleasure, you risk the chance of loosing yourself. The fans cheer the artist on as she performs songs like “Lydia Wears a Cross”, “Love, Try Not To Let Go”, and one of the fans’ favorites, “I Was Neon”.
Jacklin skips the encore and closes the show with the song “Hay Plain”. The slow tempo of this song brings the night to its natural ending. The singer expresses gratitude to her fans as she says goodbye and promises to come back. Overall, the album Pre-Pleasure brings us on a journey of self-discovery and growth, and the live show is the concrete representation of those themes. Julia Jacklin’s honesty when delivering her music creates a sense of community inside the venue, allowing the audience to go home after the show feeling understood and seen.
