CONCERT REVIEW: PANIC! AT THE DISCO AT TD GARDEN

Panic! at the Disco returns to Boston after four years with their new album Viva Las Vengeance. Opener Jake Wesley Rogers, Missouri-based singer-songwriter, welcomes those who arrive early to the venue with his piano tunes and vibrant outfit and energy. Marina, a Welsh singer, follows right after with songs like “Blue”, “Venus Fly Trap” and “Oh No!”. Fans cheer on the indie/experimental pop sound characteristic of her music. Both openers deliver an entertaining performance and set the stage for a great night.

Panic! at the Disco hit the stage with their song “Say Amen”. Brendon Urie, lead vocalist of the band, joins the stage in the midst of a smoke cloud and the crowd goes wild. The album, Viva Las Vengeance, references the classic saying “Viva Las Vegas”, giving homage to the band’s home town. Despite the album’s new music influences, it stays true to the rebellious rock/punk sound that has won our hearts throughout the length of their career. Panic! at the Disco presents us with a set list of 25 songs, playing the new album in its entirety and giving us a taste of the oldies and classics as well. The venue sings the loudest to the song “I Write Sins not Tragedies”, a song that transformed the band into a worldwide phenomenon.

Viva Las Vengeance serves as a depiction of the consequences of fame and criticism that the lead singer has faced over the years, at the same time sharing an optimistic expectation for the future and an ongoing call to his fans to bet on themselves. It doesn’t matter if you are a fan of the new album or the band’s older hits, Panic! at the Disco brings us a show that promises to entertain anyone who is down for a great night of music.
