Kicking off their “Tiny Music Box” tour in Nashville, TN and New York, NY the week before, Rainbow Kitten Surprise made their return to Boston fresh off the May 10th release of their fourth album, Love Hate Music Box.
A crowd of loyal, eager fans filled Roadrunner as opener Ethan Tasch started the night off with intimate acoustics. The anticipation was palpable in the crowd as the lights went out and RKS pranced onto the stage with a powerful opening number, “Devil Like Me”. The excitement continued as they quickly transitioned to fan favorite, “Cocaine Jesus,” next. The crowd erupted with dancing to the beat, settling into the infectious, fun atmosphere the band fosters.
Alongside glowing lights and their logo on the big screen, lead vocalist Ela Melo showed off creative dance moves for every song. You could hear the crowd roar with awe at every move in tune with the beat, captivated by the performance. RKS created a special atmosphere at their show that could be felt throughout the room. It was all consuming, about being in the moment and savoring over every heartfelt lyric, guitar riff, and drumbeat.
The band were ready to perform a setlist that consisted of the perfect mix of old favorites and songs from their new album. A standout of the night was the live debut of “Hot Pink Ice Cube.” Despite the album being released three days before the show, fans in the room still knew every lyric.
RKS put on a show that offered something for everyone, catering to both new fans and old. Catchy melodies and infectious beats were found in tracks such as “Goodnight Chicago” and “Superstar,” while adding a captivating delivery of lyrics with the deep cuts “Overtime,” “First Class,” and “Painkillers.”
The final song of the night, long time favorite and recent TikTok hit, “It’s Called: Freefall,” united the entire room and wrapped up the show as the perfect finale.
Leaving the venue, commentary could be heard from fans on how “they just keep getting better every time.” The range of subjects their songs cover is part of the appeal—from mental health, to self reflection, and relationships—it’s easy to find a RKS song to relate to. The ability to perform a spectacle of a show and mesmerize a crowd is an art they have mastered. Their craft is heartfelt and whimsical, which has made Rainbow Kitten Surprise top tier in the indie genre.
Following their three nights in Boston, the rest of the “Tiny Music Box” tour includes three nights in Austin, TX and three in Denver, CO. With plans to change the setlist every night, there’s lots of live performances of new songs to look forward to.
