Local singer Ray LaMontagne graced the Boch Theater last week, performing for an audience of 3500 enthusiastic fans. Originally from Nashua, New Hampshire, he has made a significant mark in the folk rock music scene, and his New England fans always welcome him with open arms.
The opening act for the show was Tomberlin, a singer-songwriter from Louisville, Kentucky. Armed with just her acoustic guitar and her captivating voice, she opens the night creating a moment of hushed anticipation. Her emotive singing and thoughtful lyrics invited the audience to reflect as they enjoyed her music. With engaging banter and heartfelt songs, Tomberlin set the stage for the main act.
Ray LaMontagne, emerged onto the stage bathed in blue light, offering only a glimpse of his profile. He engaged with the audience, sharing that the night’s setlist was selected through a social media questionnaire, expressing his gratitude for the privilege of making music for a living.
Joined by two talented musicians, Ray kicked off the show with “Ojai.” The audience, characterized by their respectful and contemplative demeanor, followed his every move as he performed his repertoire. The energy in the theater surged when Ray launched into his classics, such as “Hold You in My Arms,” “Let It Be Me,” and “You Are the Best Thing.” The crowd sang along enthusiastically and cheered when the singer hit the higher notes.
Ray LaMontagne introduced two of his latest songs, “Broken Sky” and “Takes Me Back,” seamlessly blending them with his signature style. After the encore, he closed the show with “I Was Born to Love You,” “Jolene,” and “All The Wild Horses” before bidding his farewells.
Ray LaMontagne is a beloved figure in Boston, not only because of his New England roots, but also due to the profound way his songs transform ordinary moments into something extraordinary, evoking a sense of wonder and mystique when contemplating his music.
